Of timetable

My next sem's timetable will look something like this, excluding tutorials of non-cores and possibly one more module:

Cores:

EE2004: Electronic devices - Some chemistry stuff, semiconductors, dielectric materials, Bipolar junction transistor (BJT), etc..

EE2005: Electronics - Dry circuit analysis, amplifiers, op-amp, diodes, BJT amplifer circuit, Field-effect transistor, etc.

EE2011: Engineering Electromagnetics - EM waves and their applications. I think got some revision of PC1432 and MA1506 stuff..sheesh.

Others:

ST2334: Statistic and Probability - As the name suggested, statistic and probability lor.

GEM2900: Understanding uncertainty and statistical thinking - Of making rational decisions to survive in an uncertain world through statistical and probabilistic ideas about information. Can be counted as either science gem or arts gem.

And one more module which I have yet to decide. But judging from the above rather-cramped timetable, I am not certain if I could possibly squeeze in another mod and not killing myself as a result. *shrug* Oh wait, the lab is not every week. But then, it seems that every core needs a separate timeslot for the labs. So how can I possibly allocate any 6th module without clashing? We shall see..

Ahh.. SSA2204, Nation-building in Singapore? Fit nicely into the thursday slot. Might as well right? Can clear my Singapore studies (SS). Aiya, shall think about it some other time ba, meeting up with the signallers again later. Heh.

Zidane and Materazzi banned and fined

Well, if anyone is still following the famous Zidane vs Materazzi headbutt incident, here's the verdict by the Fifa's disciplinary committee.

Both players recieved a fine and a suspension. Zidane with a fine of 7500 swiss francs and Materazzi 5000. Zidane was handed a 3 match ban but since he's no longer playing, he offered to perform 3 hrs of community service which the committee accepted. Materazzi, who was punished for repeatedly provoking Zidane,
was given a 2 match ban, in which he will miss the qualifiers in the Euro 2008 againist France (coincidence?). In the hearing, it was agreed that Materazzi's comments was insulting in nature, but not racist.

It was a fair solution and Zidane can now end his career on a brighter note then what we saw 11 days ago in the world cup finals.

Laptop reformatted!

After days of fighting with the damn spyware which found its way into my laptop a few days back through the disguise of a game (not porn hor!) which I downloaded, I finally decided I had enough of the shit. Basically what this spyware does was to introduce adware, popups and even browser hijack! I tried all sort of things, including downloading all sorts of free spyware scanner plus remover programs i can find out there and scanning, running and deleting the detected ones. But the problem still persisted. For the record, i had spybot search & destroy, ad-aware, spyware doctor, norton anti-virus, etc.. (Not that these softwares are not good, its just that they only removed 70-80% of the problems but not all of it) So, I lan lan suck thumb, go backup all my documents, music, videos & important stuffs, and proceed with the reformatting. Good thing i have an external hard disk drive, if not it would be a darn hassle.

Now that the lappy is re-formatted, its now running much faster and of course all the spyware removed. And guess what? The first thing I die die wana install before anything else was firefox. Sorry to all IE users out there, but I just cant fathom how you ppl survived without tab-browsing. I was clicking relentlessly on the middle mouse button just now, expecting a new tab to shoot up, it was then i realised it was IE. Sheesh.

Of school matters

If you all (refering to nus people) still dunno, the timetable for academic year 0607 is already out. And for Engineering friends, you would probably have recieved an email informing the modules that have been pre-allocated to you. As for fellow Electrical and computer engineers, the allocation shall be as follows:

The highlighted being my allocated modules. It seems that the majority of the EE people are in group A, taking the modules I would prefer to take if given a choice. Reason being that EE2006 is a pre-requisite for another core module, EE2007. And if I were to be allocated in a group without EE2006 in this sem, EE2007 would be drag until yr3. Argh, watever. Now that I only have 3 cores, 2 or 3 more modules need to be selected. One of which shall be a math module, another gem B and probably one more something else.

Also only the lectures will be pre-allocated, we will need to register for our tutorials and labs:

(i) tutorial sessions via CORS website at http://www.cors.nus.edu.sg/ from 14 Aug to 16 Aug 2006, same period as the CELC Tutorial registration

(ii) laboratory sessions via ECE website at http://online.ece.nus.edu.sg/ece2labgroup/ from 21 Aug to 23 Aug 2006.

Also, seems like Ninjalzg and Chuwen not in the same group as me, while Jere and BK is with me. C03 is going to split up liaoz. =(

Cors bidding Round 0 will kick off on 26th july(wed) 0900.

Zidane vs Materazzi

The world cup final saw a dramatic headbutt into the Italian's chest followed by a red card for Zidane. What exactly happened that cause Zizou to lose his head? The interview with a french tv channel provided us with some answers:

It seems that Materazzi insulted Zidane's mother and sister, but Materazzi denies speaking of his mother (but not his sister?) in another interview. Zidane apologised for the assault, but have no regrets over what he has done as regretting would mean that Materazzi was right to say what he said. However, he refused to reveal what exactly Materazzi said.

"Do you imagine that in a World Cup final like that with just 10 minutes to go to the end of my career, I am going to do something like that because it gives me pleasure?"

"I want to ask for forgiveness from all the children who watched that. There was no excuse for it. I want to be open and honest about it because it was seen by two or three billion people watching on television and millions and millions of children were watching. I have children I know what it's like and I always tell them not to be taken advantage of and to avoid this type of situation."

- Zidane

"I didn't mention anything about religion, politics or racism. I didn't insult his mother. I lost my mother when I was 15-years-old and still get emotional when I talk about it."

"Naturally, I didn't know that his mother was in hospital but I wish her all the best. Zidane is my hero and I have always admired him a lot."

”I didn’t call him a terrorist either , I don’t even know what an Islamic terrorist is!”

- Materazzi

Fifa has already began their investigation into this matter and Materazzi will face a disciplinary proceedings with the committee in july 20.

What exactly was said remains a mystery. But, Britain's top lip reader suggested the following:

She deciphered the insult as being "you're the son of a terrorist whore"

Materazzi told Zidane to "calm down" before accusing him of being a "liar" and wished "an ugly death to you and your family". This was followed by "Go f*** yourself"

If that was the case, there is no wonder why Zidane headbutted Materazzi for such an insult. He might not have handled it the appropriate way, but he did what any self-respecting man would have done to uphold the dignity of his family.

The world cup final

120 mins packed with drama. A headbutt. A red card. And hell lots of action from the 2 great teams.

Yes granted, he's just human and frustration must have gotta the better of him from all the pushing and grabbing from the Italian defender. However, such a preposterous and laughable action, which would have left a deep ugly stain in his legacy, was totally uncalled for. Not only was that a foolish way to end his career, it was downright irresponsible to the rest of his team mates and fans who looked to him as a source of motivation. Zidane's headbutt at the 109th minute in the 2nd half of extra time saw a red and Zizou's teary exit to the dressing room. It was saddening sight to bear for me and the rest of the French supporters.

Zidane did well in the rest of the match, pushing the ball deep into the opponents' half. His beautiful penalty shot in the 6th minute won France the lead which they held on till the 19th minute when Materazzi punched in a spectacular header from the corner. The rest of the match saw both sides trying their best to struggle past the opponents defense to break the deadlock. Toni's header found the crossbar instead from yet another corner, leaving the french breaking into a cold sweat. Henry's low cross not finding his targets from his many deep runs down the flanks. Toni's header in the 62nd minute was ruled offside. Zidane's superb header almost going in, but landed on Buffon's safe hands instead. It was a breath-taking match after the 2 goals, with France dominating mainly in the attack and Italy, with their effective defensive play, breaking down any incoming threats from the french.

It was a great battle for both side with neither willing to give in. Yet, the competition required a winner and after 120 mins of struggle, it was down to the penalty shootout. And with Zidane's (the best penalty kicker and captain of France) exit, the morale of the french team was greatly affected. So with Trezeguet's unlucky miss on that chip and the Italians keeping their composure to deliver a perfect penalty shoot out, Italy claimed their 4th world cup championship.

Of Mega platoon gathering

Around 1 week back, we had a Mini Platoon gathering. Yesterday we had a massive one, involving almost the full strength of the platoon, less a few. This one, however, was a rather rushed one without ample planning and coordination. As a result, I realised a few people that we left out only on the day itself, including Pandy (who came, phew), Weiheng (had sports camp), Cheng Guan (err oops?!) .

It was ktv after lunch at KBox in Paradiz centre. Again, people still need to warm up first and for at least the 1st hour, me and Jevon have been hogging the mike again. Then people start coming in, Yi Cai with his amazing FIR songs, Pandy with his Hey Jude and Stephanie Sun's songs, Chang Tai with his Dong Li Huo Che, Jian Cheng with erm his wierd china songs.. Gelhead came along halfway, but surprisingly he was so shy and did not really sing a single song.. Now, what really surprises most of us was really how well Jevon sang. He is certainly the best singer i have heard so far among our platoon and so deserved the K-king award for his mesmerising voice unlike some other people who produced unbearable disappointing sound and yet hogged on to the bloody mike (pointing to myself).

Next up, we went to the Mind's Cafe prinsep branch (opp Paradiz centre), which is a board game shop similar to the settlers cafe, as recommended by Jian Cheng. We played pit which is a lame game similar to heart attack, sequence which is a variation of the game connect 4 and the taboo.

Had a long dinner (from 8pm till 10+ i think) in swensen's at Plaza Singapura. We ate. We talked. We joked. we laughed. Just like back in our army days, having fun in each others company. And we waited for the Ninja to hand over his iPhO duty (which he chao kenged again as usual) and joined us for dessert which most of us shared a giant earthquake while Gelhead and Jevon munched on their crunchie cones, Ninja on his all-fruits flavor topless five. Then, gelhead popped up an interesting question: "Can you imagine 10 years down the road and we have a gathering like this, we will be going like 'ohh i better watch my cholesterol level.' or 'I'd be meeting my wife later.'?" Indeed, by then, we would be 31's or 32's, no longer like the bouncy and adventurous us now and possibly being tied down by other committments like career and family. And given the rather diverse interests within the platoon, will we still be as close as we used to be?

The night was spent in Ninja's house and by then there's only Pandy, Si Qi and myself left because the rest backed out. Actually, the night activities was supposed to be clubbing, but since most people were not really interested or have some other reasons, it was cancelled. Thus we went into the stand-by-the-side-and-decide-what's-next mode after the dinner. And eventually we settled for Ninja's house but it seems that the rest weren't really interested, must be scared of his unidentified-white-stuffs all over his floor due to his *ahem* which as a matter of factly, there was indeed..

We watched a disgusting movie (Wolf Creek) of an awfully sadisitic fucker torturing the hell out of a trio, whose car broke down on the way to wolf creek, and eventually inflicted upon them a crual inhumane death. It was darn sickening and makes me wonder why the hell someone will rent such a movie... sheesh. Perhaps he wana learn the art of torturing and do something to some people for a certain Nazi concentration camp he experienced not long ago? Dang, better stay away from me..

Alrighty, i think thats about it.

France got lucky, so did I

My prediction was correct once again for the second semifinal match. However, this time its more of a fluke on my part. And certainly, France did bring into play that stroke of luck they had this morning with the portuguese.

Just how long can France survive on those "inevitable moment of madness" of Fabien Barthez, the keeper of the French team. For goodness sake, catch the ball, punch it out of the box or even flick it out for a corner. Not hit it high up into the air, waiting for it to land on a lethal head of a member of the opposing team. And you could only count yourself lucky Figo's strike did not find itself into the net. Then, who the hell would risk that clumsy short pass in the dying moments of the match when the enemies were all desperately finding the equaliser? They were lucky it was an offside.

And of course, the foul that won the penalty for France was somewhat controversial. Was it a dive? Or not? Henry could have avoided the trailing leg. Or could he? It was happening all so fast that even if its a fake, it was a clever one. Whatever the case is, the referee was convinced that it was a real foul and awarded the penalty kick which was scored by Zidane. And that was the only goal of the match, the one goal that opened the path to the finals for the French.

Furthermore, Cristiano Ronlado should really stop his diving crap. It was so balantly obvious. Perhaps he should learn a few tricks from Henry ya?

But then again, Barthez did make a few vital saves and together with a commendable defense force, Portugal did not really come close to scoring, less the above mentioned blunder by the keeper. But whether this defense will be capable of breaking up the Italians' attack in the sunday's finals is something I cannot be certain of. But surely, it shall be a great final.

The goal

Zinedine Zidane

The Sensational 2 Minutes

Reference my previous entry about my prediction for the first semifinal between Italy and Germany. Heh. I was right!!

For 118 minutes, the host nation was still hopeful for that place in the finals. Then it came, the moment that broke the deadlock between the two teams, the moment that shattered all hopes for the german team. What a pass. What a spendid shot. And what a spectacular curl into the net that was. There was no way Lehmann could catch that. Sensational. Fabio Grosso was the man who delivered that stunning first goal for the Italians.

Although it was very late into the extra period by then, the germans continued to push forward in hope of finding that equaliser. Yet the Italians' second unexpected goal came and ended it all for germans. It was a quick counter attack, with a brilliant "no look" pass from Gilardino to Del Piero, who then released the winning goal into the back of the german net.

2 mins. The 2 minutes that separated the 2 great teams with 2 superb goals, one heading for the finals in search of their 4th world cup win and the other devastated, with the hope of a 3rd place as a consolation.

Near Miss

The asteroid, 2004 xp14, possibly up to a kilometre wide just whizzed past us 2 days back. It was just 432,709km away from us and that figure in astronomical term is counted as a near miss. We have to be grateful that it did not find its way anywhere into the Earth surface, else the consequences will be devastating. Probably "a crater many kilometres across, maybe as much as 10 or 15 km" or one huge tsunami if it were to head for the ocean instead, says the report.

Read more here.

And that would mean it came pretty close to our moon orbit too isn't it? What if the asteroid were to hit our moon instead? Wah no moon at night.. Sheesh! No wait, there will more shit other than the lack of moon viewing or your romantic walks under the moonlight crap. The tides, which resulted by the gravitational interaction of the Earth and her moon, will be gone. Furthermore, the kinetic energy transfer between the Earth and the moon due to their rotations will be lost and this will bring about a faster angular momentum in the Earth's orbit and thus a faster rotation. This means that we will experience a faster day time and possibly serveral other consequences which we might not want to even think of. So there, stay where you are, don't come close to my moon either.

Of more astronomy fun

Of world cup and soccer

Now that the quarters are over and the semis in just a few hours time (my prediction), world cup 2006 is slowly coming to an end. Certainly, this world cup will be remembered for a few things. One of which would be the few favourites making their way out early in the competition, this will include Brazil, England, Argentina.

Lets talk about the defending champions Brazil. Was it really that much of a shock that they were defeated by the French? I dun think so. Seriously, they are just another over-rated team with poor team work and a questionable defense. Perhaps people were just too blinded by Ronaldo's goals, but admit it, he's not as deadly as he used to be, not as fast, kicking nicely placed crosses into the crowd, getting tired way too early in the match. Ronaldinho? He was never there. Utterly under-performed and disappointing. Over-confidence perhaps?

Next up England. As someone aptly put it a few days back, whatever that got England till where they were in the world cup was purely luck. They did absolutely nothing that they could be proud of nor anything that inspired football fans and non football fans alike in this world cup. It was a pure torture watching them play, especially the quarter final match againist Portugal; we were bored to tears with their defensive play with a lone joker striker. The stupidity of Rooney was one factor that brought England to its doom. And the overrated coach Sven Eriksson with his weird tactics was yet another. Seriously, shouldn't the English team be scheduled for some penalty shooting practice with goal post double the size before the next season?

As for Argentina, its a pity that they did not hold on to their 1-0 lead. Yet, they did wasted a few good chances to double that lead. It seems to me, however, that the referee was favoring the host team with a few debatable fouls against Argentina. Nonetheless, Klose's equaliser certainly brought the Germans back into the game and eventually won. Indisputably, the hero of the match had to go to the German keeper, Lehmann, who saved a couple of crucial penalty shots which won his team into the semi.

My Prediction

As for the rest of the world cup, my prediction will be as follows:

Semifinals:
  • Germany vs Italy
  • Portugal vs France

Finals:
  • Italy vs France

I say France will be the winner of this world cup, what say you?

Next up, some soccer fun.

The long and short about world cup 2010, coming to you in the not-so-distant future.
