Of Random stuff

It has been very stressful of late, mostly due to the nearing examinations date and the stacks of have-yet-to-complete-stuff piling up at my desk.. So i decided to clear some of it by doing some maths today, finishing up tutorials and webcasting. Yet, by evening, i lost all the momentum and had the SOS sympton and began a night long chat via the MSN (Read: Addiction plus Distraction).. and surfing around..

As much as we tried very hard to reject the idea that zg invariably grumbled to us about how hard life is, we have by now realised that there is some truth in his words, well only to a certain extend, restricting only to this semester, or so i hope. This semester has been a very hectic one, with the main time sucker to be our ctw projects. Well, thats not all, physics in particular, recieved one of the most complains among my friends and classmates. A whopping 20+ chapters from serway in 35 lectures within 3 months, covering a huge variety of topics ranging from electricity/magetism to electromagnetism to waves/EM waves to quantum/modern physics. Furthermore, this crazy "intro" module is equivalent to 2-3 of the intro modules over at science. Every lecture was a rush and we were left with no time to absorb all the concepts and thus having to rush into another without fully understanding the previous.

Moreover, more and more people are thinking of changing faculty, further proving the point that life is hard in here. So yes, ZG is right after all. So i shall dedicate the following picture to him:

Found these while surfing around:

From ChannelNewsAsia, link here

SINGAPORE : An officer from the Singapore Armed Forces died while participating in the Singapore Biathlon at East Coast Park on Sunday.

Colonel Bernard Tan Cheow Han, 39, collapsed and died after nearly completing the 10-kilometre run.

He was just 600 metres away from the finishing line.

The colonel had earlier finished a 1.5-kilometre swim before the run.

SAFRA which is also the organiser of the event says immediate medical attention was given to Colonel Tan at about 10am.

He was sent to Changi General Hospital and was pronounced dead at about 11am.

The cause of death is still being investigated by the police.

More than 1,700 people took part in the biathlon which included the chiefs of army and navy.

Colonel Tan was the Assistant Chief of the General Staff in charge of army personnel matters.

He was married with two young daughters aged two and seven

A mournful date we, the members of the guards family, shall all remember. The ex-commander of 7 SIB guards brigade, collasped and passed away after a biathlon in East Coast Park on that fateful sunday morning. At a young vibrant age of 39, Colonel Bernard Tan left behind 2 young daugthers and a loving wife. He was described by fellow officers and men as a helpful and caring commander, often giving advise to junior officers and taking care of the welfare of his men. Sadly, all these came to an end as we witnessed how fragile a life can be. If you wish to pay your last respect to Colonel Tan, the wake will be at Blk 223, Toa payoh lorong 8 and his funeral service will be held at the military funeralat mandai cremetorium hall 1 on friday at 1215 hrs.

Cool!

I was aimlessly surfing around while talking a break from studies when i chanced upon this very cool site, Optical Illusion. As the name suggests, this site contains lots of cool illusions where we dun always see what we think we see..

How this photo can be possible will be rather obvious when you stare and think about it for a while.

Is this painting possible?

What is the trick behind this puzzle?

"Increase Distance from Chart untill you find it readable ... and better do something about it!"

Lastly check out this video for the amazing paper dragon illusion:

You can even make your own dragon and try it out!

More videos

The recent physics lecture on quantum physics left us all baffled where electrons seem to act like waves instead of particles and worse still, it can be at two different place at one time as seen from the double slit experiment where an electron, in going through one slit, interferes with itself going through the other slit. The following video discussed this weird phenomenon. And there’s an even more puzzling phenomenon towards the end of the clip. Link here!

Well, enough of physics, here is an amazing juggling performance by Chris Bliss.

Next up, a hilarious shit and let’s call it “Hold this"

Lastly, Two Commercials to Brighten Up Your Day, watch them over at Pandemonium's.

The current condition of my desk now:

Not really that messy, yet.

Studying for my gem (Living with fluids) lor. Test is on this coming monday. This section is about flight of birds & insects and swimming of the fishes. Can get rather technical at times, although they claimed that this is more of a discovery channel kind of module. Luckily I have physics knowledge man.

Anyway, I have been having wild thoughts lately, making some impossible and crazy academic plans. Nah not going to mention it here. Those who knows me well will know what I have been thinking about.

Some Clips + My Brother's Exam results!

Hilarious clip by Tripod in a performance at a comedy festival. Link here, stolen from Pandemonium's.

Tips: Click "play" then "Pause" and wait for it to load completely before viewing.

Oh in case if you found the nick pandemonium ringing a bell, you might be one of those Diablo2 players lurking around the Planet Diablo Forums. Yes he is the man with the extensive knowledge about the realm of diablo, often hanging around the forums to help out newbies and give advice to many other players out there including myself. He even wrote a fan fict that not only displayed his far-reaching familarity of the diablo2 game; it also exhibited his amazingly fantasy mind which was far greater than mine. Yes i attempted 2 fan ficts in that forum before which was nowhere compared to his. In fact, I gave up on the second one, which to this day, I am still holding on to the hope of completing it. Yet, the hectic workload of school life totally shattered that possiblity.

Ok moving on, since we are at the topic of game, I present to you Ultimate Utopia XXIII. Again link stolen from KarKen aka Half Asleep
. This is a must watch for Final Fantasy fans! Another hilarious shit that made my day. =)

Next, now that we have seen Initial D, here check out Initial OK!, Singapore's version of Initial D. Very cool and creative clip.

Congrats!

Woah! Temasek Poly released their exam results and when i looked at my brother's result, it was a total Joy. All I saw was Distinctions and As plus one B+. Amazing.

Oh btw, he is doing engineering too.

Congrats brother! Cheers!

Chopsticks + Blogfest 2006 + Of IA & SEP

Check out this Chopsticks using guide by Stupid Genius:

The blogger even explains the phyiscs principle behind the methods of holding a chopsticks and also a step by step guide on the correct way to hold them in the traditional method as shown below.

The above is the traditional method of holding the chopsticks and it’s the more efficient way to pick up food. Yet, very few people, including myself, actually use this method. The most commonly used method would be the cross method where the sticks are hold in such a way that a cross is formed. I was once reprimanded corrected by Wei Heng, my partner in crimes in S3 branch aka the loving buddy of NinjaZG, who showed me the above method of holding the chopsticks which I actually tried it for a few days until I gave up and got back to my old ways… just cant kick the habit I guess. It is indeed a more efficient way of picking up food such as fish balls as the grip is much more stable than the cross method. But heck, there is always the spoon.

Of IA and SEP

Anyway i think its time to get real serious with my work now that its only around one month plus to my exams, shucks just how fast time flies, another semester is coming to an end soon...

I was actually discussing with some of my friends of our plans for year 3 already. Well, no harm doing some dreaming planning of the possibilities of getting out of nus for at least a semester going for Student Exchange Program (SEP) or Industral Attachment(IA).

Well of course, IA would have to depend on whether we are being accepted by the companies and also i would think that this program will be rather competitive. Unlike our counterparts from ntu, they have to do compulsory attachment before they graduate, which i believe is a very good thing as this program allow students to gain exposure to the industry, yet we nus engin students have to fight for our places. Sadly, it would have to depends on our CAPs again.

As for SEP, there's always the financial factor. It was estimated that a semester of sep would average out to a cost of at least $6000 Sing dollars and up to $12000 for places like the UK (read: Tim and Si Qi!). Not many can cough out such money. So some friends, including Chu Wen, suggested going NTU for exchange. At first, this idea may seems ridiculous to some and they will exclaimed: "Whats the difference? Nus and ntu, both Singapore leh, bo liao arh?" But if you dun have the money and you feel like experiencing a different university life for one semester and also take advantage of the system, you will see where me and my friends are coming from...

I damn bo liao do this quiz:

Your brain:80%interpersonal,60%visual,
100%verbal, and 160%mathematical!

Congratulations on being 400% smart! Actually, on my test, everyone is.
The above score breaks down what kind of thinking you most enjoy
doing. A score above 100% means you use that kind of thinking more than
average, and a score below 100% means you use it less. It says nothing
about how good you are at any one, just how interested you are in each,
relatively. A substantial difference in scores between two people means,
conclusively, that they are different kinds of thinkers.

Matching Summary: Each of us has different tastes. Still, I offer the
following advice, which I think is obvious:

  1. Don't date someone if your interpersonal percentages differ by more
    than 80%.
  2. Don't be friends with someone if your verbal percentages differ by
    more than 100%.
  3. Don't have sex with someone if their math percentage is over 200%.

My test tracked 4 variables How you compared to other people your age and gender:
free online datingfree online dating
You scored higher than 47% on interpersonal
free online datingfree online dating
You scored higher than 19% on visual
free online datingfree online dating
You scored higher than 65% on verbal
free online datingfree online dating
You scored higher than 68% on mathematical

----------------------------------------------------

Wah! My math score is dangerously high lar... Fortunately, its only 160%. Phew. If its another 40% higher then… ahem… “Don't have sex with someone if their math percentage is over 200%..” , that's it man... =S

On the other hand, my visual skills score so low?? Maybe that explains why i had so much difficulties trying to visualise those 3-D surfaces for the triple integrals in my MA1506.. Gosh. Thats bad.

Lets do surveys!

My EG1413 project:

Entertainment in Singapore

Judging from some survey responses, Singapore is not the place for the fun-loving expatriate. There are limited forms of entertainment to speak of and the nightlife in Singapore was regarded as one of the worse in the region.

Our group aims to examine the cause and effects of this problem and formulate possible solutions to liven up the entertainment scene in singapore.

Our survey (Link here) will gather more information from the locals and foreigners on some of the possible solutions and feedbacks.

Thank you for your participation.

Next up just some
personality surveys with the Johari window. People obsess, I also follow...

Just give your honest answer ba, anyhow do also can. Just for fun only mah.

So Malu arh!

Just some jokes digged out of the ivle, 3rd guards' signaller community forum:

Ever spoken and wished that you could immediately take the words back or that you could crawl into a hole? Here are the Testimonials of a few people who did.

First testimony:
I walked into a hair salon with my husband and three kids in tow and asked loudly, "How much do you charge for a shampoo and a blow job?" Hearing myself, I turned right around and walked back out and never went back. My husband didn't say a word. He knew better.

Second testimony:
I was at the golf store comparing different kinds of golf balls. I was unhappy with the women's type that I had been using. After browsing for several minutes, I was approached by one of the good-looking gentlemen who work at the store. He asked if he could help me. Without thinking, I looked at him and said, "I think I like playing with men's balls."

Third testimony:
My sister and I were at the mall and passed by a store that sold a variety of candy and nuts. As we were looking at the display case, the boy behind the counter asked if we needed any help. I replied, "No, I'm just looking at your nuts." My sister started to laugh hysterically. The boy grinned, and turned beet-red and walked away. To this day, my sister has never let me forget.

Fourth testimony:
While in line at the bank one afternoon, my toddler decided to release some pent-up energy and run amok. I was finally able to grab hold of her after receiving looks of disgust and annoyance from other patrons. I told her that if she did not start behaving "right now" she would be punished. To my horror, she looked me in the eye and said loudly in a voice just as threatening, "If you don't let me go right now, I will tell Grandma that I saw you kissing Daddy's pee-pee last night!" The silence was deafening after this enlightening exchange. Even the tellers stopped what they were doing. I mustered up the last of my dignity and walked out of the bank with my daughter in tow. The last thing I heard when the door closed behind me, were screams of laughter.

Fifth testimony:
Have you ever asked your child a question too many times? My three year old son had a lot of problems with potty training and I was on him constantly. One day we stopped at Taco Bell for a quick lunch in between errands. It was very busy, with a full dining room. While enjoying my taco, I smelled something funny, so of course I checked my seven month old daughter, and she was clean. Then I realized that Danny had not asked to go potty in a while, so I asked him if he needed to go, and he said "No". I kept thinking "Oh Lord, that child has had an accident, and I don't have any clothes with me." Then I said, "Danny, are you SURE you didn't have an accident?" "No," he replied. I just KNEW that he must have had an accident, because the smell was getting worse. So, I asked one more time, "Danny, did you have an accident?" This time he jumped up, yanked down his pants, bent over and spread his cheeks and yelled "SEE MOM, IT'S JUST FARTS!!" While 30 people nearly choked to death on their tacos laughing, he calmly pulled up his pants and sat down. An old couple made me feels better by thanking me for the best laugh they'd ever had!

Last testimony:
This had most of the state of
Michigan
laughing for 2 days and a very embarrassed female news anchor who will, in the future, likely think before she speaks. What happens when you predict snow but don't get any...? Here's a true story: We had a female news anchor that, the day after it was supposed to have snowed and didn't, turned to the weatherman and asked "So Bob, where's that 8 inches you promised me last night?" Not only did HE have to leave the set, but half the crew did too, they were laughing so hard!
